United Way is hoping to connect hundreds of volunteers to community established nonprofit organizations in Amarillo and Canyon through its Day of Caring on April 20.

According to United Way, Day of Caring is a community wide event and an excellent opportunity for volunteers to give back and help any way they can.

City of Canyon staff, along with West Texas A&M University student volunteers, will arrive at project locations at 9 a.m. and aim to complete all projects no later than 12 p.m.

Six projects through the community have been selected by the City, including planting flower boxes at Palo Duro Canyon State Park's visitor center, cleaning areas at Palo Duro Creek Golf Course, along with other various parks and community service projects at three different locations, such as Canyon Senior Citizens Center.

Coordinators for the event are Chris Sharp, Canyon's assistant City manager, as well as Amber Bustos, program manager for institutional advancement at WTAMU.

“We are excited to join with WTAMU to make a positive impact on Canyon,” Sharp said. “It’s also great to see our City employees volunteering their time to make our community a better place.”

Last year's Day of Caring in Amarillo and Canyon included hundreds of volunteers who came together to dedicate their time to making a difference. That program included 11 non-profit agencies, 350 volunteers, 25 projects, 2,450 hours and $59,143 in monetary value saved.
