An elementary school student in Panhandle tested positive for the measles.

Superintendent John Sherill said the district was notified by the Department of State Health Services of a confirmed positive case at Panhandle Elementary School.

Sherill told ABC 7 News the student was last on campus on April 15.

"We are following (DSHS) guidance regarding how to proceed. Safety is our top priority at PISD so we’re taking every measure to keep our buildings clean and safe," said Sherill.

It's the first measles case in Carson County and the 14th in the Texas panhandle.

There are 674 cases statewide. But according to DSHS, less than 2%, or fewer than 10 of the confirmed cases, are estimated to be actively infectious.
