As people are evacuating in anticipation of Helene livestock owners must make arrangements for their animals too.

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is opening barns to those in need of large animal shelter during evacuation.

There are 180 stalls available for sheltering horses at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, and several other spots available at Pike County Cattleman's Association near troy for horses and cattle.

Patrick Moody, with Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries said this is something they offer as part of the state emergency plan.

"Everybody thinks about the human side, but there is also the animal industry side," said Moody. "We will have staff that are monitoring these storms and any impacts."

  • Supplies for temporary identification of your animals, such as plastic neckbands and permanent markers to label your animals with your name, address, and telephone number.
  • Handling equipment such as halters and appropriate tools for each kind of animal.
  • Water, feed, and buckets. Tools and supplies needed for sanitation.

Camping sites will be available at Pike County Cattleman's Association, but not Garrett Coliseum.
